Overnight road closures in Ryde and Staplers: what you need to know

Island Roads will undertake a series of night-time road improvement works on busy main roads during October and November.

St John’s Road Bridge and Marlborough Road in Ryde, along with the Staplers gyratory (‘roundabout’) system at the junction of Long Lane and Godric Road, will all be improved. The work will take place at night to reduce inconvenience to the travelling public.

Why the work is taking place at night
An Island Roads spokesperson said,

“The work involves regular resurfacing, which, unlike other projects such as the forthcoming improvements at Godshill, does not require deep excavations. This means we are able to reopen the road during the day when we are not working.

“Motorists should, however, be advised that the road surfaces at these locations may be temporary until the final surface is applied, so they will need to take additional care while using these routes.

“We have worked with the Isle of Wight Council to agree this schedule of night-time works, which, as well as being undertaken at night, will take place during the winter months, outside the busy holiday season.”

Schedule of works
The work on St John’s Road Bridge is scheduled to take place over a single night, 27th October 2026, to prepare the road for new high-friction surfacing in November.

The Staplers gyratory system will be reprofiled and resurfaced over three nights – 28th, 29th and 30th October 2026 – to provide a smoother ride through this section.

Then, starting on Monday, 2nd November 2026, Marlborough Road will be resurfaced between Circular Road and Westridge Cross over six nights.

Closure times and possible changes
In each case, the road closures will be in place between 7.30pm and 6am.

While Island Roads will make every effort to keep to the programme, it is possible that the schedule could change due to factors including the weather and unexpected ground conditions.

The spokesperson said,

“It is impossible to work on main roads like these without having some local impact but working at night in October and November will, we hope, minimise the inconvenience.

“We would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their understanding during these works.”
