road ahead closed

Pan Lane closed and St George’s Road one way for four months

This update in from the council, Ed

The temporary one-way system to facilitate works on St George’s Way in Newport which was due to commence on 31 October will now start on Monday 7 November, to enable Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to carry out work to divert overhead power cables.

The work by SSE will require an overnight road closure on Wednesday 3 into Thursday 4 November while new poles are erected and associated cabling work is undertaken.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public health, public protection and highways PFI, said:

“In order to minimise disruption to residents we felt it made sense to delay the introduction of the one-way system to enable SSE to complete their works before the main work to create the roundabout begins.

“I would like to thank residents in advance for their patience as we undertake these important works which will ultimately improve traffic flow around Newport and create better links with the Pan Meadows development and enable to future development east of St George’s Way which will provide much needed jobs for Island residents.”

Release issued in early September 2016
The next phase of the works to construct a new roundabout and pedestrian footways to connect St George’s Way to Pan Meadows and the new commercial development site is set to get underway at the end of October.

Island Roads, which is working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council, has written to nearby residents to update them on the first phase of works and notify them of the next phase and the temporary arrangements which will be put in place while the works are carried out.

Phase two of the works involves more earthworks beyond Pan Lane which will be severed by the new road; the construction of a new roundabout along with carriageway widening works on St George’s Way; pedestrian improvements to the St George’s Approach/M&S/Morrisons junction, connection of Pan Lane to the new road and the installation of traffic lights along St George’s Way/Shide Road junction. Once completed traffic will be able to use the new road to access the Pan area via Pan Lane. Phase two of the works is due to commence in October 2016 with an anticipated completion date in February 2017.

During the next phase of works, Pan Lane will have to be closed from 3 October and a temporary one way traffic restriction will be put in place from 31 October on St Georges Way, Medina Avenue and St Georges Approach with some limited parking controls to formalise a gyratory traffic management arrangement with all vehicles travelling in a clockwise direction. These traffic management arrangements are required to allow the safe completion of the proposed roundabout and carriageway widening works on St Georges Way, and are designed to keep disruption to the flow of traffic in and out of Newport to a minimum.

There are a variety of factors including inclement weather, emergency works and scheme extensions that can affect the timing of works. Due to the size and nature of this scheme, the works programme is subject to change but programme updates will be issued as each phase progresses.

Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public health, public protection and highways PFI, said:

“I am really pleased that the first phase of works has been carried out on time and with minimum disruption, however we recognise that the second phase will have more of an impact on residents but we hope any disruption will be offset by the improvements being made for all road users.

“We would like to thank residents in advance for their assistance in enabling us to complete these works which will ultimately improve traffic flow around Newport and create better links with the Pan Meadows development; enable future development east of St Georges Way and provide much needed jobs for Island residents.”
