Pannier Market for Newport: A Small Step Forward

As we mentioned last week, VB are pleased to be involved in helping to promote plans for a Pannier Market in Newport. Helen Bailey returns with more news about the development of the Pannier Market. Ed

Micro-markets
As we said last week, here on VentnorBlog, we are trying to move the Pannier Market concept forward.

Pannier Market for Newport: A Small Step ForwardTaking the view that ‘evolution not revolution’ is what we’re aiming for, we are hoping to trial some ‘micro markets’ before Christmas.

As part of the aim to put the ‘marketplace back within the heart of Newport’ it is hoped that these smaller events will help raise the need and give a feel for what a more vibrant market environment would be like within our local community – by providing a real taster of what could be on offer in the future to both traders and consumers.

The wish is to complement the already thriving marketplace around the church in Newport whilst also re-energising the market culture in other towns and villages around the Island – and bring opportunity (and training) to local traders at every stage. We intend for these micro-markets to take place over a couple of weekends in December, in Newport and at least one other location on the Island.

Opportunity, diversity, creativity
By providing greater opportunity to potential marketers we hope to bring more diversity in produce and showcase the creativity that is so much in evidence on our Island – and provide an easier and more straightforward route to the public.

As we all know, markets provide so much more than an opportunity to shop – they are the window to the very soul of a community, providing a vibrant meeting place as well as a showcase for home-grown talent.

Get in touch
We are now very keen to hear from local producers, craftspeople and traders who might be interested in showcasing with us – or in fact anyone who is interested in becoming involved in other ways. As we said this is a community-based – and, we hope, community-led – project.
