A novel use for those red telephone boxes?
Up and down the country, villages have successfully petitioned BT to leave in place all those distinctive red telephone boxes that have become so much part of the rural scene.
The puzzle is what to do with them. There have been many suggestions but now the little hamlet of Pigmarsh Piddle has come up with perhaps the most imaginative of all.
A novel use
They are planning to use theirs to house a telephone.
“We think many of our locals will be glad of it,” the Chairpersonwoman of the Parish Council explained. “Quite a few cannot really afford a phone of their own, while others through forgetfulness simply run out of paid minutes or let their battery run flat. Some mislay theirs or leave them behind when they pop out to the shops. For whatever reason folk can pop into the telephone box and instantly restore contact with their fellows – something considered absolutely essential in this modern age.
“As for the cost, we are fortunate that Councillor Mr Didmay Falanx of this parish has offered to donate one of his priceless collection of public toilet entrance machines, which he is confident he can modify to accept ten pence pieces and which we will be fixing to the telephone box entrance door.”
“In a word,a more modern version of spending a penny,” offered this reporter, somewhat facetiously.
“I hope not. We had quite enough of that sort of behaviour in the past.” the Chairpersonwoman retorted sharply.
