Lower Gills Cliff Road, which has been closed since February 2024 following significant rockfall onto the highway, is nearing completion.
DDGA, a local company, have been installing a netting of high tensile steel anchored to the rockface by 70 rock anchors. The 300 square metres of netting will not only support the rockface, but also prevent any boulders that do become loose, falling onto the highway.
Jordan: Works are far more extensive than much public commentary
Isle of Wight council leader, Phil Jordan, has shared a set of shots from the site to show the extent of the works being carried out.
Councillor Jordan, told OnTheWight,
“I think it’s fair to say that the works are far more extensive than much public commentary and do show why the importance of getting this right was paramount in the way it has been done and with the care and safety of all in mind.”
The road is due to reopen on Friday 9th August – should the work be completed ahead of schedule, we’ll let you know.
