Isle of Wight Marlins Swim Club is delighted to be organising and running the iconic Pier2Pier swim race on 20th July 2024 (with a back-up date of 3rd August in case of bad weather).
Remarkably, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the race. The day will include special celebrations. Marlins is also sharing some fun stories and history of the Pier2Pier through the years on their Facebook page.
Surge in interest
Sea swimming is becoming ever more popular all over the UK. This year’s Pier2Pier swim race reflects this surge in interest.
It’s completely sold out, with an impressive 200 swimmers (and a current waiting list of 35) lining up at the start.
Half of the entrants are Island residents, who have been training for the event in pools and off beaches on the Island.
Where and when
The Pier2Pier Swim starts at mid-day on Sandown Beach adjacent to Sandown Pier, with the swimmers making their way across the 1.8 mile course to finish at the Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club. Swimmers should start arriving at Shanklin from around 12.30pm.
Come along and cheer them on.
Volunteers and local organisations
The event couldn’t take place without many volunteers and local organisations, and we thank Sandown Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, Ryde Inshore Lifeboat, Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club, Ryde Beach Lifeguards, Shanklin Deep Sea Fishing Club, volunteer kayakers and many others for providing their time and expertise.
Isle of Wight Marlins Swim Club has been running this event for over 20 years. It is a small friendly club for anyone over 18 years of age who want to swim for fitness, fun or competition.
