Planet Ice Management Hope Ryde Ice Rink Can Be Saved

Readers may have seen the news earlier today about the uncertain future of Planet Ice in Ryde.

Planet IceThe news raised questions not only over the jobs of those employed at the Ryde Arena, but also of future planned events, such as the Peter Andre gig in December 2012 (as raised by Keith Haywood on Twitter).

“Issues will be sorted over next week or two”
We got in touch with event organiser Annie Horne, who told VB, “We are aware of the recent press surrounding the future of parent company of Planet Ice and are in touch with our contact in head office.

“Planet Ice have issued a statement confirming they believe these issues will be sorted over the next week or two. Planet Ice have also advised they don’t believe there is concern for the future of Ryde Arena. We will, of course, ensure we remain updated.”

We’re sure this’ll bring a huge sigh of relief for the many fans and users of ice rink.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the rink/venue is in jeopardy – I went skating before New Year (the first time in 15+ years) and while the staff were polite and attentive, the whole building had a run-down vibe – it could do with some investment in my personal opinion.

I spent many years of my life down there and would be very sad to… Read more »

A few years ago they wanted to build a travelodge there to make it viable. Looks like a new owner might need that kind of thing to make an ice rink work long term. It’s always been a shed, a blot on the landscape. My sympathy to the workers if they lose their jobs and to the women who may not get to see Peter Andre sing… Read more »

This building has been an eyesore since it opened – it’s architecturally very bland. The best outcome would be a new (full size) rink funded by a hotel or retail outlet.

I took my daughter there a few weeks before christmas and I was amazed at the number of people using the facility. Skating is good exercise and is a lot of fun and it would be a real shame to see it go. Agreed it isn’t the nicest looking building but then neither is Tesco, Sainsburys, Pan Meadows, etc etc.
