Another national chain could be coming to Tesco Extra on the outskirts of Ryde.
It would be the third store for Timpson on the Isle of Wight.
Timpson — best known for its key cutting, watch and shoe repair services — currently has other outlets in supermarkets on the Island, including ASDA and Sainsbury’s in Newport.
A pod installed in the car park
The plans for Tesco, which have been submitted to the Isle of Wight council, would see a pod installed in the car park, taking up four spaces close to the entrance.
It would measure 6.6 metres by 2.6 metres and be finished with timber cladding.
Expanding the business
The national brand has other such modular kiosks across the country in an effort to expand its business.
Some of the services it will provide through the concession would include dry cleaning, shoe repairs, engraving, key cutting and watch repairs.
Objection
The owner of an independent key cutting business on Ryde High Street has lodged his objections to the application, suggesting that Timpsons will “cherry pick the keys available leaving customers unable to get more specialised keys cut.”
View the plans
You can view the application, 22/01979/FUL, on the Isle of Wight council’s planning portal. Comments can be made until 9th December.
A further, separate application will be submitted for the signage on the pod.
