Plans resubmitted to convert former Sandown hotel into private home

Another Isle of Wight hotel could become a home under new plans lodged by its former operators.

Proposals to turn Melville Hall Hotel, in Sandown, into one home have been put forward again after the Isle of Wight council rejected plans in the summer.

Once-popular hotel
The once-popular hotel, on Melville Street, had more than 20 bedrooms, a dining room with up to 100 covers and bar and lounge areas.

The plans have been submitted by Alan Humphreys, who, the Isle of Wight council said, used to operate the hotel.

The hotel also used to house the Utopia Spa, with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, nail bar and multiple treatment rooms.

Planned alterations
It has been proposed to add a porch to the building and remove the pink render on part of the hotel, returning it to its original brickwork.

There are no publicly available planning documents which explain why the hotel was closed or why it should become a house.

View the plans
You can view the plans, 23/01989/FUL, on the Isle of Wight council’s planning portal.

The public consultation runs until 22nd December 2023.

Previous plans refused
The Isle of Wight council refused the previous plans in June as it said no evidence had been submitted to justify the loss of the hotel and turning it into a house would be to the detriment of the Island’s tourist economy.

The council’s refusal has been appealed to the Planning Inspectorate but there are no documents available at the current time.
