Platform One – The Hearing

We’d like to welcome Thom Gannaway, a student at Platform One, on to our list of VentnorBlog contributors. Each week, Thom will be sending through a report of the Wednesday night session at The Hearing, which takes place at The Studio in Newport. Ed

With the return of Jimmy as the Master of Ceremonies for tonight’s proceedings, there was decent atmosphere in The Studio for this evening’s line up.

The first band up on stage were Transmission, an acoustic duo consisting of Claydon Connor (pictured) and Guy Page.

The duo went down really well with the audience, covering the latest pop tunes, for example their ambitious version of T2s ‘Heartbroken’ and the Arctic Monkeys ‘Fake Tales of San Francisco’.

Second on stage was Jon Roberts; a singer songwriter with an amazing voice who is very capable, unfortunately he was not received as well as he has been in previous performances possibly due to a limited audience. Playing songs from his debut EP ‘On Coming Storm’ he draws influences from Damien Rice and Jeff Buckley.

Siniez – an Indie rock band who won last year’ Wightnoize audition, took to the stage at about 9:30p.m. With one of the members attending the Saturday rock school at Platform One and developing performance skills, it was surprising to see that the performance of the band was a bit lack lustre and there seemed to be no onstage vibe. They’re all technically good on their instruments and there is promise, but it was disappointing that they didn’t have the same attitude as they did when they played Ryde Theatre recently.

The final band to close the proceedings were Finger Monster, who brought some aggression and testosterone with their punk influenced, highly charged stage performance, however their set grew quite repetitive.

They did bring the biggest crowd up to the front of the stage and got the best reaction from all inside the venue

Even though the line up was an odd construction, the night proved to be yet another successful event for “The Hearing”, run by Platform One foundation degree students.
