Platform One will be featured in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 6 Music, as the station broadcasts from Strings Bar and Venue as part of Independent Venue Week.
On Monday 26th January, presenters Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens will host Steve Lamacq’s Teatime Session live from the Newport venue, exploring the vital role independent venues play in nurturing grassroots talent and creative communities across the UK.
As part of the broadcast, Platform One will take part in a live on-air interview, joined by a second-year degree student and indie-pop artist Ruby.

Together, they will share insights into studying at the Isle of Wight’s specialist music college, the real-world opportunities available to young people pursuing careers in the creative industries, and how Platform One supports emerging artists at the earliest stages of their journey.
Longstanding relationship with the UK music industry
The interview will also reflect on Platform One’s longstanding relationship with the UK music industry, including its connection to internationally successful Isle of Wight band Wet Leg, whose members Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers both studied at the college, and its close links with venues, festivals, and industry partners on and off the Island.

Peter Pontin, Director of Platform One, said,
“BBC Radio 6 Music’s visit is a great opportunity for people to find out more about the work we do here at Platform One.
“We have strong links with the music industry, from local venues like Strings and the Isle of Wight Festival, to national and European partners, and this allows our students to access a wide range of opportunities to perform, collaborate and gain real-world experience.”

The broadcast forms part of a week-long series on BBC Radio 6 Music highlighting independent venues and their importance in supporting new artists, audiences, and local music scenes.
The programme will include conversations with venue teams, artists, and creative educators.
