Police and Crime Commissioner: Public hustings next week

Thanks to John Medland for details of this upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner hustings being organised by IW Association of Local Councils. Ed

The first election for a Police and Crime Commissioner for the Isle of Wight and Hampshire will take place on 15 November 2012 and the person elected will have enormous power, being responsible for setting the Police budget and hiring (and if necessary firing) the Chief Constable.

The Isle of Wight Association of Local Councils (IWALC) which currently has a membership of over 90 per cent of the Town and Parish Councils on the Isle of Wight is taking a great interest in how the new system of policing will work.

Public hustings
With this in mind the Association has arranged a public meeting to which all six candidates for the office of Commissioner have been invited.

This meeting will be chaired by Councillor Gill Kennett, Chair of IWALC, and will be run on the lines of the BBC Question Time programme. To date a positive response has been received from most of the candidates.

Public invited to attend
Members of the public are invited to attend this meeting in order to hear from the candidates and to question them about their plans for the future policing of the Island.

The event takes place on Tuesday 6th November between 7-9pm at The Broadway Centre, Sandown.
