Police appeal after mobility scooter stolen from charity volunteer

This in from the police, in their own words, Ed

The victim is a man, aged in his 40s from Newport, who is a volunteer at the British Heart Foundation store on Taylor Road in the town.

He travelled to the store using a mobility scooter, which was then parked at the front of the building.

The scooter was last seen safe where it was parked at 11am on Thursday, June 26, 2014. However, by 12pm the same day, the scooter had gone.

Investigating officer PC Matt Wilford said:

“Both the victim and his wife use the scooter, and have had to obtain alternative help just to get around as a result of this theft.”

Description of unique scooter
The scooter is described as quite unique. It has:

  • Electric blue panelling with a black seat cover, battery cover and foot rug.
  • Four wheels (two large at the rear, and two small at the front).
  • There is a label/motif, by the power meter, which states ‘PMC’.
  • The batteries to this scooter have been taken from another model.
  • The cover on top of the batteries sits at an angle, rather than sitting flat.
  • The owner has also told police that the ignition has been modified and is no longer key-operated; instead it has a flick switch. This has been connected together using an eyelet from a tarpaulin, which still has some of the fabric attached.

Investigating officer PC Matt Wilford added:

“We’re appealing for any witnesses who may have seen someone taking the scooter or using it in the area.

“Sightings of a blue mobility scooter abandoned in the local area since 12pm on Thursday, June 26 are also encouraged.”
