Police are appealing for information after dozens of trees were reported stolen on the Isle of Wight.
Officers from the West Wight Safer Neighbourhoods team are investigating to trace up to 40 Leylandii trees, which are alleged to have been dug up from land off Elm Lane in Calbourne near Newport.
The trees are believed to have been taken sometime between 5.30pm on Friday, February 25 and 7am on Saturday, February 26, 2011.
Owners very upset
Investigating officer PC Tim Campany of the West Wight Safer Neighbourhoods team said: “The landowners are very upset after working hard several years ago to plant these trees, which were maturing well.
“Police are pursuing several lines of enquiry, including the use of vehicles to move the trees. Information about anybody acting suspiciously or using a vehicle in the Elm Lane and Quarry Lane area of Calbourne over the weekend could be crucial.
“It’s also possible the stolen trees have been planted again quickly in another location. People with suspicions about large numbers of trees being transported or planted together are asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.”
