An increase in reports of stolen bicycles is prompting a warning from police in the Sandown area of the Isle of Wight.
At least five bikes were taken by thieves in the town during September.
PC Dan Renshaw of the Sandown Bay Safer Neighbourhoods team said: “I would like to remind cyclists to ensure they leave their bikes secure with a suitable lock attached to a solid fixed object. At night, I would encourage residents to secure bicycles thoroughly inside a locked shed, garage or somewhere safe inside their home.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind children and teenagers about the importance of having lights and high visibility clothing when cycling during the darker evenings of autumn and winter. Police have been concerned in recent years about the number of younger cyclists who put themselves at greater risk of being involved in a collision because they’re difficult to see on the roads at night.”
Anyone with information about stolen bicycles or who would like more advice on how to protect their bike can contact their local Safer Neighbourhoods team by phoning 101 or 0845 045 45 45.
