Older woman receiving a geranium on her doorstep

Postcards, pedals and geraniums: How Operation Geranium is impacting the Isle of Wight

Operation Geranium is set to launch its third season on 1st June.

In an inspirational display of community spirit, 400 plants that have been grown by local people with disabilities and support needs will be delivered to residents living in isolation.

In this endeavour, pots of brightly coloured geraniums have been chosen, symbolising friendship and good health.

Going green
Adding an eco-friendly touch, the plants will be transported by Keert cargo bikes along 14 distinct routes.

This admirable feat will be accomplished by volunteers working with various care agencies. An added benefit of this pedal-powered delivery is a reduction in vehicular traffic, contributing to cleaner, less congested roads.

This initiative also underscores the importance of reducing air pollution and our collective reliance on burning fossil fuels, playing its part in the broader fight against climate change.

Sponsored by Wight Aid Foundation
This year, Operation Geranium has been fortunate to receive sponsorship from the Wight Aid Foundation.

Besides the primary plant delivery operation, Operation Geranium ‘Live’ is branching out into the world of music.

Gasoline Rock Club
They are setting up the Gasoline Rock Club at Bar 74 in Ryde, promising exhilarating rock gigs that they humorously describe will make “yer ear drums burst and yer eye balls bleed”, followed by the charming assurance that “a little old lady gets a Geranium dropped off on her doorstep in the morning”.

50,000 free postcards
Since its inception in May 2020, Operation Geranium has also engaged with the creative community, involving 12 local artists in a postcard initiative.

An impressive 50,000 free postcards, featuring unique art, have been distributed by over 100 local businesses.

A global platform for local artists
In doing so, Operation Geranium has created a global platform for local artists, enabling art from the Isle of Wight to reach places hitherto unexplored.

The Art Trail is a testament to the power of community projects to create lasting, global impacts.

Operation Geranium is not just a project about plants and pedal bikes, but a remarkable display of community, inclusivity, creativity, and environmental consciousness.
