In between the main events on the day, part of the course will be closed for pupils from Binstead, Newchurch, Queensgate, St Mary’s Catholic, Broadlea, Shalfleet & Yarmouth, Cowes and Arreton primary schools to compete.
The event has been organised by the Isle of Wight Council sports unit with support from Visit Isle of Wight and the Pearl Izumi Tour organisers.
Year six pupils
From 12.30pm, year six pupils from the schools will go head to head in mixed teams of five on a point to point obstacle course. Individual riders will race each other to complete the course before the next rider sets off in a series of knock-out rounds.
Eventually, two teams will compete in the final to be crowned the champions.
Community involvement
Lee Matthews, Isle of Wight Council recreation and public spaces, said:
“Although this is a fun competition, it is a fantastic example of the community getting involved in what will be a superb event.
“It is great that they will also be competing on the part of the same route the professional riders will be using, which is a great memory and experience for the children and their parents.”
David Thornton, chief executive officer for Visit Isle of Wight, said:
“It is great to see a link-up with professional cycling and local school children, especially the opportunity given to them to compete alongside some of the UK’s leading athletes.
“We hope the children and their families have a great day out and wave the flag for the Island”.
The bicycles being used in the event are being supplied by Wight Cycle Hire, and the prize giving presentation will take place at 1.45pm.
