* Details of which public toilets will stay open and which are at risk *
Town and parish councils, communities and businesses are to be consulted as part of the Isle of Wight Council’s future plans for managing and maintaining its public conveniences.
They will be asked their views on two draft lists on which the council has identified which of its 67 public conveniences it wishes to see retained as such and those which could be disposed of.
A total of 35 sites are provisionally listed for retention, with 32 sites earmarked for disposal.
It is estimated the reduction in the council’s provision of public conveniences will generate savings of £100,000 in 2011/2012, rising to £250,000 by 2012/2013. The current annual budget (in 2010/2011) is £581,000.
The planned savings are part of the council’s need to reduce its revenue spending by £32 million over the next four years.
The draft proposals for retention and disposal have been drawn up following a detailed study of frequency of use, location and proximity of other facilities.
The consultation will end on 31 January 2011. The council will confirm in February the final listings of those sites that will continue to operate as public conveniences and those which will be surplus to needs and may be disposed of.
Cabinet member for environment, transport and corporate services, Councillor Edward Giles, said: “This consultation will provide the opportunity for town and parish councils, communities and business to give their observations on the council’s intentions with regard to public conveniences.
“It is important we receive these views to ensure we can make a fully informed decision in deciding which facilities are to be retained and which will be disposed of.”
