We’ve been told that the derelict Publican pub (formerly Shoulder of Mutton) site, is finally being demolished.
By coincidence we were walking past it on Saturday evening wondering when the site was going to be tidied up or redeveloped. We must have been distracted, because it looks like they started on Friday!
History
We understand that as the Shoulder of Mutton it was frequented by the farmers going to animal’s market that was opposite (hence the name), before the Cineworld complex was built.
If you’re looking for a photo history of it, this site has got a good selection and some first-person history on it.
Auntie P (thanks for the tip and photo!) has also got quite a few shots of its deterioration, as well as its burnt out interior and its redevelopment
What’s being built
The original planning application for the site was made back in 2005, but as it ran out without work starting, it had to be reapplied for in October 2010. The reapplication was successful.
It’s a big site, facing both South Street and Pyle Street, which includes some old red brick buildings.
The planning app described it as the “demolition of existing buildings. Construction of 3/4/5 storey block of 69 flats (33 one bed, 36 two bed), basement car parking (38 spaces) with access off Pyle Street.”
Buchanan Land Holdings Ltd, a company now-based in Woking was listed as the developer (was in Suffolk for original app).
It’s a significant site, as it’s on one of the ‘corners’ of the Coppin’s Bridge round about, and will be frequently seen by Islanders and visitors alike. It’ll be interesting to see how it develops.
