Quay Arts Centre launches Crowdfunder appeal for restoration support

Quay Arts Centre has launched a Crowdfunder campaign to raise funds for a vital restoration project.

Quay Arts is an essential part of the Isle of Wight community. The charity has provided enriching creative experiences for nearly five decades, operating from a converted Grade II listed building.

The centre, situated at the head of the River Medina, is housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century brewery warehouse. This heritage-rich site has become a vibrant cultural hub, holding a special place in the history of Newport and the wider community.

Urgency of restoration
However, Quay Arts now faces a critical challenge. To continue its operations and maintain the centre as a safe and welcoming space, urgent restoration work is required. This work comes at an estimated cost of over £90,000.

Maintaining and restoring the historic Grade II listed building is crucial. It is not only about preserving the structure’s historical importance, but also ensuring that it remains an operational and inviting space for all.

Why support is vital
Restoration is not just about bricks and mortar. It is about safeguarding a place that has immense value to the community, visitors, and future generations.

Quay Arts has called on the public for support in various forms. Whether through raising awareness, contributing financially, or spreading the word, every action helps to sustain this vital project.

A phased approach to restoration
The first phase of the restoration project focuses on repointing the wall that faces the River Medina. This phase alone requires £15,000.

The building, now 150 years old, has weathered the natural elements over time, with its location near a tidal estuary accelerating wear on the brick mortar. Specialist tradespeople will be needed to carry out the repairs, ensuring the materials and methods used are sympathetic to the building’s historic character and original construction.

Consequences without repairs
If the necessary repairs are not made, the damage could worsen, potentially putting the future of Quay Arts at risk. The charity could be forced to close its doors, impacting the cultural and social life of the community.

Quay Arts invites the community to be part of this journey. With collective support, the centre can continue to be a place where history, creativity, and community intersect.
