Rape suspect released: Police investigation continues

Detectives investigating a rape in Newport on the Isle of Wight have today (Tuesday, June 23, 2015) released a suspect from police custody with no further action.

The man, who was arrested on the Island on Monday afternoon (June 22, 2015), has been eliminated from enquiries.

The victim, a woman, is being kept informed with appropriate support from specialist officers.

Several lines of enquiry continue to be pursued by detectives who are examining CCTV footage and analysing potential forensic evidence.

Background
Police were called just after 3.30am on Sunday, June 21, 2015 to the Hunnyhill area of Newport between Heytesbury Road and Grange Drive where the victim was sexually assaulted by one man.

The scene was sealed off for a forensic examination.

Police continue to treat this report as an isolated incident with no wider risk to the community at this time.
