Frank James Pillar on truck

Refuse truck causes damage to historic Frank James pillar

Thanks to the several readers who have been in touch this morning about an incident at the former Frank James Hospital in East Cowes.

We’re told that around 10.15am this morning on the junction of Adelaide Grove and Hospital Road, a refuse vehicle from Island Waste reversed into one of the historic Frank James Hospital wall pillars.

Extensive damage to historic pillar
As you can see from the photos (thanks Daryl and Vidya), the top of the pillar was knocked off. It’s now been removed, care of an Isle of Wight Compost vehicle and crane.

Given the site is Grade II listed (we’re not sure whether that extends to the wall) it’s likely to be a costly restoration.

We’ve contacted Island Waste for a comment and are awaiting their response – which we’ll add here once they get back to us.

Thanks to OnTheWight reader, Daryl, for sending through photos.

Have the large number of legal entities who own it been informed?

That is a shame. Please keep us POSTED!

The wall is also listed separately (Grade II).

Perhaps,if they are really sorry, in addition to the necessary repair they might also be invited to consider helping with the provision of a litter bin at the nearby bus stop.(We’ve been asking for this for a while now, to help those unable to avoid the need to deposit their trash for us to retrieve from the other side of the wall.) …A serious inexpensive opportunity for… Read more »

…And now our council are talking about serving a works notice (the owners having failed again to submit their latest application as expected, although they are more co-operative), may we now also have the wall repaired please?

Now that the roof & guttering has been fixed following the issue of the works notice (thanks again to all concerned) it would be good to hear when the waste contractors are going to fix their damage.

Over two years now; the contractor is about to leave the island, the weather is no longer ideal for building work, and feet are still dragging.

The FJ Friends expect to be working on site again this Sunday afternoon; we don’t expect to be celebrating the wall repair any time soon.

Quite a week – refuse lorry demolishes the crash barrier at Medina Way and now this. Lets hope the pillar is restored asap otherwise it may never get done.

And a pillar was knocked over in a road by me this week – another refuse truck perhaps, or even the same one on a spree….

If you knocked over a pillar in a road, Tryme, why are you trying to blame a refuse truck? ;-)

Oh, thanks for pointing out my grammatical mistake, Tom! It certainly wasn’t me!

Indeed. lets hope that the Pillar is repaired and restored as soon as possible and with it the whole of the Frank James Memorial Hospital. It is now time for owners and Council together to come up with a solution.

How much do we value our Heritage on this Island? It has such potential, but needs attention and care.

Whilst this is a bit of a giggle, the bigger picture is that this Grade II listed building is slowly falling down.
It’s time somebody in county hall had the balls to get the owners to either restore it to it’s former glory, or repair it so that it doesn’t deteriorate any further.

Three years ago an intoxicated motorist demolished both iconic pillars on my front gates. My insurers paid to have them rebuilt but their religious iconicity has gone for ever. Now they are just, well, pillars.

All pillars of the community come crashing down eventually, it’s just a matter of time.

“`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

(Shelley)

Maybe the preceding four lines are also relevant to the previous Cabinet :-))

“Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,”

No- just a large proportion of its inhabitants (including me)! :-)) It just seemed to me that Shelley’s description of hubris could be applied to Island (and other) politicians who, with faulty memories and rose-coloured glasses, try to burnish their past deeds into something for which we should be thankful.. Tory supporters in CP and OTW often indulge in this pastime on the polices that have led,… Read more »

Just for clarity, Cicero, I was joking about the ‘antique land’ bit. It’s a wonderfully phrased poem and I’m glad you brought it here, (I did get it).

Tenuously connected, (I’m sure there were gateposts in Shakespeare), do you do NT Live, Cicero? The recent ‘Othello’ was stunning, I thought.

@tryme “Tenuously connected”

It was the photos of the collapsed gatepost that brought Ozymandias to mind.

(Didn’t see the Othello!)

Probably a lapse in my grammar again, Cicero, but I meant that asking you about seeing Othello was a bit off topic – I was trying to make a tenuous connection to justify it ;->

The pillar repairs were completed this morning. My thanks again to the council’s conservation officer Lee Byrne, who made sure that this got done eventually, and who has continued to provide so much help with FJ and our many other deserving sites. The less good news; the FJ owners have now confirmed that contrary to recent announcements, no work on the building will start before early next… Read more »
