Thanks to Maxine from Newport Parish Council for sharing details of this appeal with OnTheWight readers. Ed
The Newport Parish Council has set up a working group, led by Cllr Terry Martin, that will be assisted by a local historian Mark Earp.
They recognise that a number of commemorations are planned in the connection with the outbreak of the War so they wish to focus on some of numerous events from that date onwards where there was a significant impact on people living in Newport and Carisbrooke.

The Parish Technical Officer (Chris Hougham) is searching for information to help the working group in identifying incidents and suchlike.
This could involve the conflict on the battlefield, at sea and here on the homefront and how that impacted on family life. He is looking for photographs, letters, postcards, press cuttings and memorabilia from local people to ensure that the various projects are very much a local commemoration to help everyone, particularly youngsters, fully appreciate and understand the magnitude of arguably the most important period of modern history.
