Services of Remembrance will take place across the Island on Sunday 14 November 2010.
In Newport, a traditional procession from the Guildhall to Sts Thomas’ Square led by the Isle of Wight Council’s Mace Bearer will start at 10.50am.
Members of the procession will join other organisations in Sts Thomas’ Square for prayers and the two minutes silence at 11.00am. A wreath laying ceremony will follow, before a Service of Remembrance in Newport Minster.
Among those in attendance will be Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White, High Sheriff Peter Kingston, Andrew Turner MP and Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr Ian Stephens.
Members of the Royal British Legion, local councillors, representatives from the Island’s emergency services, representatives from HMP Isle of Wight and local scout and brownie groups will also be present.
Field of Remembrance
Elsewhere on the Island, new for the Isle of Wight this year is a Field of Remembrance, a place where people from all parts of the Island can remember loved ones lost while serving their country.
Located in the grounds of Carisbrooke Castle, it opens on Wednesday 10 November until Monday 15 November. A short Service of Remembrance will take place there on Thursday 11 November, members of the public are invited to attend.
On Armistice Day, a maroon will be fired at 11am from the drill tower at Newport Fire Station marking the start of the two minutes silence.
