After a day and night of very heavy rain, residents and businesses around the Island are feeling the impact.
On Thursday afternoon many roads were made virtually impassable due to storm overflows and water runoff from fields.
Many roads completely disappeared under the deluge of water and it wasn’t just trunk roads that were affected.
Flooding for eleventh time since 25th October
In Forest Hills and Broadwood Lane, Gunville residents once again were unable to drive and some had to abandon their homes for the eleventh time since 25th October 2023 (watch video by Gemma Lawrence).
Lawrence: Nothing has been done
Gemma Lawrence, who has lived in the area for more than ten years, told News OnTheWight,
“I’ve lived there for ten years and this has never happened.
“People have had to abandon their homes and since 25th October, after 11 times nothing has been done by either the council, farmer or Environment Agency.”
Jamie from Renodrain and Sam Loba were on the scene (again), trying to assist with the flooding, but as can be seen from Gemma’s video of the flooding, the drains were overwhelmed as the water poured directly from the fields into the residential area.
Action by the council
News OnTheWight has contacted the Isle of Wight council to find out what steps have been taken, or are being taken to mitigate and improve the situation for residents.
Probably not of any help to those in Gunville, but sandbag locations, if needed, can be found at:
- Well Road, East Cowes
- Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Ryde
- St Mary’s Car Park, Cowes
