Solent CO2 Pipeline map of the three possible routes
The three proposed routes

Richard Quigley urges residents to engage as Isle of Wight faces potential CO2 pipeline impact

Richard Quigley MP is urging constituents to comment on plans for a new carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline which could cut through the Island.

ExxonMobil has already discounted a marine only option and proposes building a pipeline from the oil refinery at Fawley and routing it directly through the Island.

Met with Islanders
Richard has already met with local residents and campaign groups to listen to their concerns. He also attended a special Parish Council meeting in Porchfield on Tuesday 13th August.

60 people attended the meeting held in the Village Hall, raising concerns over the pipeline and the damage it will do to the countryside, farmland, wildlife, and island as a whole.

Residents’ concerns
Significant numbers of constituents have also contacted the MP via email to voice their opposition since the plans were announced.

“We all know we have to do something about the amount of fossil fuel we are consuming, but this isn’t the answer. This project is entirely financially motivated. It’s for the benefit of ExxonMobil, not the environment.”

“The per tonne price for CO2 emitted is due to be £130/tonne by 2030. The Fawley refinery emits in the region of 3-4000 tonnes a year. Nowhere do they address the need for a reduction in the production of CO2. This is about finding new ways to operate business as usual.”

“ExxonMobil don’t exactly have a great track record, and the technology being proposed here isn’t trialled and tested.”

“Carving up the Island so they can ‘greenwash’ their operation isn’t something I can support as an Islander.”

Quigley: The more people that have their voices heard at this stage, the better
Richard raised his own concerns and voiced those of local residents at one of Exxon’s recent consultations events, which was held at The Pavilion, Newport Recreational Ground, 7th August.

He is now urging all Island residents to have their say.

“It’s vital residents have their say. There’s a series of public consultations coming up, but many aren’t even aware of the proposal.

“That’s why I’m reaching out to residents. The more people that have their voices heard at this stage, the better.”
