Island Roads’ structures team will be carrying out two projects next month as part of their work to maintain the Island’s important bridges.
The work on both Yarmouth Bridge and Medina Way Bridge will involve road closures, so Island Roads is keen to provide advance warning to motorists and pedestrians.
Yarmouth Bridge repairs
The work at Yarmouth Bridge is scheduled to last two days, 2nd and 3rd November, though 4th November has been set aside as a contingency in case any unexpected issues or poor weather are encountered.
The work involves replacement of landing pads, which safely transfer load between the swing span deck and its supports, as well as repairs to the bridge parapet and its ‘nosing strip’ – a protective steel fixture between the bridge deck and the road.

Diversion route for Yarmouth Bridge
The bridge must be in its open position to carry out this essential maintenance, meaning traffic and pedestrians will be unable to cross it between 9.30am and 3.30pm while work is under way.
A vehicular diversion will be via Thorley Road, Wilmingham Lane, Middle Road (Newport Road), Afton Road, Hooke Hill, Copse Lane and Hallett’s Shute.
Medina Way Bridge ground investigations
At Medina Way Bridge, further ground investigations are being undertaken ahead of the major bearing replacement scheme, which has been rescheduled for September 2027.

This work will help Island Roads limit the impact when the scheme gets under way next year.
Overnight closures and diversions at Medina Way
It will mean that the northbound carriageway will be closed for two nights between 7.30pm and 6am on November 2nd and 3rd . The southbound carriageway will then be closed between the same hours on November 4th and 5th.
The usual signed diversions will be in place. For southbound traffic this is via the industrial estate (Dodnor Lane, Manners View and Riverway). The northbound diversion will be via the Lidl Roundabout, Hunnycross Way and Hunnyhill.
Island Roads responds
An Island Roads spokesperson said,
“We have scheduled these works for the quieter November months and, by either working overnight on Medina Way or during shortened shifts in the case of Yarmouth Bridge, we have done what we can to minimise inconvenience.
“But as important as this work is, we acknowledge it will have an impact on residents so we would like to thank residents and businesses in advance for their understanding.”
