Raising over £16,000, the efforts of the charity’s team of 49 runners will enable 31 young people in recovery from cancer to join a four-day sailing trip with the Trust for the first time next summer to help rebuild their confidence.

Cheered along the way by a group of local volunteers from the Trust, 14 runners from the Isle of Wight represented the charity as they took part in the 10-mile race in and around Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard on a warm and windless day.

Completing the flat and fast course in what were heralded as excellent conditions for this year’s Great South Run were seven colleagues from Island-based company Moore Stephens who raised an impressive £2,151 for the Trust.

Moore Stephens employee, Duncan Swift explained,

“What motivated me to come and do the run for the Trust was that it is an excellent cause. There’s nothing like rebuilding the confidence of youngsters that have been through a traumatic experience, such as cancer. Being a parent myself, I think it is something that every parent should do.”

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust
Launched in 2003, the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. In its 12th year, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person Principal Treatment Centre and a growing number of Designated Units in the UK. Taking young people aged between 8-24 who are recovering from cancer on four-day sailing trips.

The fastest woman running for the Trust was Jessica Gray, 28, from Cowes, who set a new personal best, completing the course in 1.18.48. After the race Jess described what she enjoyed most,

“The atmosphere on the start line, everyone there, everyone excited, everyone bubbling with energy, it’s a cool thing to be part of.”

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust would like to thank all of the Isle of Wight runners for their fantastic efforts fundraising and taking part on the day.
