Year 7 students took part across the day in interactive lessons to promote just how easy and cost effective healthy eating can be – each portion made cost just 55p.
HTP’s Training Consultant Lorna Murray supported full-time cookery learners Taylor Stables, Georgiana Birch and Lesley Green who demonstrated how to make a Tomato Pasta Sauce. Sallyane Farley from HTP was on hand to engage with the students by running fun food related quizzes – students had to guess the variety of an item of fruit or vegetable and complete an A – Z list of fruit and vegetable names.
Raising funds for the Youth Trust
In the next classroom, one of our Food Technology Teachers, Chantal Knight, made mini pizzas. In the canteen Nigel Joliffe, from Caterlink, Ryde Academy’s catering providers, demonstrated how to make a healthy stir fry and homemade smoothies. Caterlink’s Operations Manager, Tony Lane, spent the day talking to students about sugar content in soft drinks.
The canteen also raised funds for the Youth Trust by donating 5p for every main meal they sold on the day during break and lunch time.
Raising the profile of the Youth Trust
Rachael Fidler, HTP Training’s Managing Director said,
“We’ve been working with the Youth Trust for over ten years. Over this time they have supported a number of our learners by providing counselling, advice and information about services that are available locally.
“It’s great to be able to help raise the profile of the work that they do and to help raise money for them. We have strong links with schools on the Island and it’s good to be working with Ryde Academy to promote healthy eating and to show students how simple and cost effective it is to create some really nutritional dishes.”
Contributing to Bite the Wight
Over the next few weeks HTP Learners will be making a number of seasonal products with the proceeds going to the Bite the Wight appeal.
These include tomato chutney, onion chutney, and traditional steamed fruit puddings and fruit cakes. If you would like to order any please contact [email protected]
Nat Nelson from Ryde Academy said,
“It was fantastic that the Academy, HTP Training and Caterlink were able to work together to promote cheap and healthy meals and we hope to work together again in the future on similar projects. Thank you to HTP for spending the day with us and to Caterlink for their work with students.”
