Ryde Academy pupils told to chose new subject after studying Japanese for two years says parent

Last week a concerned parent of a year nine pupil at Ryde Academy got in touch with OnTheWight.

There were very unhappy that Ryde Academy had announced that pupils who had been studying Japanese for the last two years had been told they would have to select a new language for GCSE.

The parent claimed this is equivalent to 28 days of lost teaching and learning time (two hours multiplied by 39 multiplied by two years).

They said,

“Parents and children are being told that from May they will need to learn a new language at the same time as studying all their other GCSEs.

“This has a very serious consequence on their future as to obtain a university place they require a pass in a language and these students will now be trailing way behind and starting afresh.”

OnTheWight got in touch with Ryde Academy six days ago and were promised a response. Unfortunately, they have failed to provide a confirmation that what the parent told OnTheWight is correct or why the decision has been made to cut Japanese tuition from the curriculum.

The parent went on to say, “We were told that the school restructuring was aimed at providing a better education and recruitment of teachers.”
