Ryde Harriers … keep on running

After a large turnout for the 5km version, it might be seen as a disappointment that there were considerably less lining up for last week’s IW 10km championships, but a field of sixteen still represented a good size for the challenge of the seemingly endless lapping.

Ryde harriers Aug 2015It was business as usual for the winner, with Paul Cameron (35:27) from IWRR a comfortable lap in front of Wight Tri’s Sean Williams (36:52).

Stuart Backhouse continued his impressive recent form in third with a time of 37:24 whilst Harry Rann laid down a superb time of 38:55 as the first junior.

In the women’s race Ryde Harrier Sarah Kavanagh had almost the exact same winning margin as Cameron as she crossed the line in 42:27 ahead of second placed Judy McCabe from IWRR who finished in 43:51. Veteran titles went to Judy McCabe (Vet 35), Paul Cameron (Vet 40), Mandy Womack (Vet 45), Peter Jolliffe (Vet 60) and Jonathan Norton (Vet 70).

Great West Fell Race
Four Ryde Harriers travelled to the West Country to take part in the Great West Fell Race.

The course of five miles takes in the highest point on Dartmoor with 1,500 feet of ascent but also offers one of the less technically challenging descents in the fell running calendar with a quick finishing mile of moorland grass tracks.

First home for Ryde was Tom Blackwell in tenth place in a time of 47.14. Andrew Keehn was next 31st in 1:01:58 just ahead of club chairman Andy Leal who was 32nd in 1:02:10 with Dan Murphy 38th in 1:03:49 to complete the quartet.

Next meet
The annual IW half-marathon takes place on Sunday 15th August, starting and finishing at Appley Park with a new multi-terrain course for 2015.

Entries are open and can be placed online via www.rydeharriers.co.uk where details of the IW Youth Trust 5km run, which takes place at the same time, can be found.
