Ryde Interchange: Changes at bus station from next week until Spring 2023

As already reported by News OnTheWight, the work to improve Ryde Interchange is set to enter a new phase shortly.

Partners including the Isle of Wight Council, Wightlink, Southern Vectis and the railway companies are currently collaborating on a scheme to provide better travel connectivity at the interchange as well as much-improved public space for residents and visitors.

What it includes
This work includes the creation of more amenity space, improved pedestrian and cycle links through the Esplanade area and a new layout to the bus station.

There will also be new street furniture and planting throughout the Esplanade. The work is being paid for using government grant from the Transforming Cities Fund.

Reconfiguring the bus station
From Monday 12th September, work will begin to reconfigure Ryde Bus Station.

The changes will improve the layout of the terminal so buses can move in and out of the site more safely and efficiently.

The changes
Buses will also be able to travel directly up George Street rather than having to travel along the Esplanade and  double back at the Dover Street roundabout to exit the town.

This new phase will largely be contained to the bus depot itself and will not require any significant new changes to the existing temporary traffic arrangements in the area.

From 12th September until the spring
However from 12th September until the spring it will be necessary for buses to use temporary stands that will be created nearby.

Routes 4, 9 and 37 will move to the Rose Garden on the Esplanade while routes 2, 3, 8, Island Coaster and the Downs Breezer will move to the Esplanade on the opposite side of the road.

Ryde Travel Shop will be open as usual. Further information can be found via SV Website.

Removal of nine resident parking bays
This temporary arrangement will mean that around nine resident parking bays outside Solent Court will be unavailable.

Those holding permits for these spaces will however be able to use them in the nearby Quay Road car park just across the road.

Overall, the wider project remains on schedule to finish in the spring. The work will not affect the forthcoming Tour of Britain Race which starts on the seafront on Sunday (11th September).

Jordan: Greatly-improving Ryde Esplanade
Cllr Phil Jordan, Cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said,

“I am pleased this important project is progressing well.

“This new element will help us in our goal of making visiting — and travelling through — Ryde Esplanade a greatly-improved experience.”
