Ryde Town Council appoints enforcement officer to address Town Hall decay

Ryde Town Council has taken a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issues surrounding Ryde Town Hall / Ryde Theatre.

This summer, a Planning Enforcement Officer was appointed specifically for the town, with one of his top priorities being the deteriorating state of the historic building.

Urgent action required from Town Hall owner
The officer has already begun taking action by sending a letter to the owner of Ryde Town Hall outlining urgent concerns.

Papers from the most recent Ryde Town Council planning committee explain that should it be necessary, more action would need to be taken in the form of issuing a Section 215 notice.

Mitigating risks from falling masonry or glass
The enforcement officer has advised that swift action is required in order to mitigate any risks to the public from falling masonry and glass.

The letters require the owner to undertake immediate measures to weatherproof the building and ensure it is secure from potential break-ins. Failure to comply with these requests will lead to formal legal proceedings against the owner.

Other buildings being monitored
The other buildings being looked at by the enforcement officer include:

  • Royal York Hotel – George Street
  • Vectis Hall – Melville Street
  • Former Poundland Shop – High Street
  • Leo Commodore Cinema / Bingo Hall – Star Street
  • Salvation Army Charity Shop – High Street
