Ryde Esplanade station where toilets will be located

Ryde Town Council to shoulder costs for essential public facilities

Public toilets in a popular Isle of Wight seafront tourist town will open after all, following an agreement between the authorities that look after them.

No date has been set, but it is hoped the toilets in Ryde Esplanade station will open in time for Easter.

It follows an agreement reached between Ryde Town Council and South Western Railway (SWR), after months of negotiations, over who will clean the loos.

Cost falls on RTC
The town council will now pay to clean and insure the facilities – which are the only ones in the area – for an estimated cost of £27,000 per year, plus VAT.

The town council will also have to pay more than £1,000 in legal fees, to take on the lease.

Western Gardens replacement
It had previously looked after the former Western Gardens public loos, leasing them from the Isle of Wight council.

They were knocked down to make way for a new access road to Ryde Pier and there were reassurances they would be replaced.

The current loos are inside SWR’s train station, which was refurbished as part of an Isle of Wight council-led project but there has been disagreement over who should be responsible for them.

IWC never intended to manage them
In December, SWR said it was up to the Isle of Wight council, but County Hall said it never intended to manage them.

Ryde Town Council said it was told SWR would maintain them.

This week, it was revealed further talks have been held between the town council and SWR.

May: No other way forward
Ryde Mayor, Richard May, said it was in the public’s interest that the town council pay to clean them and councillors agreed there was ‘no other way forward’.

They unanimously agreed to the deal.

How will Ryde council protect the new facilities when they can’t protect the toilets at puckpool and couldn’t look after the temporary ones on the seafront? Going by the current incompetence I’d estimate 6 to 9 months before the next lot of vandalism closes them with, yet again, no culprits caught and a massive bill paid for out of the new (higher) precept.

Including VAT that is around £100 a day to clean the loos. Did RTC spend that amount on the Western Garden loos which, I am sorry to say, absolutely stank and looked filthy. They were in a very nice art deco style building, but were certainly not maintained well – same issue at the loos by Newport bus station. Another point is that the new loos will… Read more »

Well, something seems to have gone awry, as the new toilets are completed, but not yet open. The portaloos outside the station have been taken away. Yesterday a gentleman “of a certain age” came into the ticket office clearly in desperate straits. He was advised to walk “ten minutes” to the Cornwall Street toilets, try Hovertravel or one of cafés opposite the station. What a position to… Read more »

Well, bizarrely it looks like temporary portaloos have been re-located outside the station, even though the new, permanent toilets have been finished and ready for use for some time. Surely some flexibility over use could be agreed prior to finalising the lease, rather than forking out for these…?

So the temporary toilets have gone, so must have been for Bank Holiday only. We’re back to the previous situation of no provision, until the famous “lease” is worked out. Not a good situation for arriving visitors…
