A new beacon of creativity and community spirit has emerged in Ryde with the opening of Ztam and Co.
Behind the venture are Kelly and Dee, a husband and wife team, whose long-held dream of opening their own shop has finally come to fruition.
Recounting their journey from a successful pop-up shop in Newport back in 2015, through health challenges, to the realisation of their dream, Kelly says,
“We are a husband and wife team that always had a dream about opening our own shop.”
Despite the hurdles, including Kelly having to give up photography, their ambition never wavered. Thanks to a life-changing treatment plan started in 2023, the couple seized the opportunity to open their shop above The Duck restaurant in Ryde, turning their dream into reality.
A showcase of Island talent
Ztam and Co is a celebration of over 70 artists, crafters, and producers from the Isle of Wight, showcasing a rich array of local talent.
Dee’s craftsmanship shines through in the shop’s unique display units, all made from over 100 recycled pallets in just eight weeks. The shop offers an eclectic mix of items, from original artwork and sea glass to pottery, resin crafts, gift wrap, and greeting cards, providing a treasure trove of gifts for any occasion.
“The Island really does have some amazing talent”
Kelly proudly states,
“Our shop features over 70 artists, crafters, and local produce.
“The Island really does have some amazing talent.”
The grand opening saw a ribbon-cutting by Councillor Michael Lilley and welcomed over 100 visitors, marking a huge success for the couple.
A community hub for creativity
Ztam and Co is set to be more than a shop; it aims to be a community hub for crafters and artists alike. With plans for workshops, demonstrations, and sessions on various topics ranging from social media use to alternative pain management techniques, the shop will serve as a vibrant centre for learning and sharing.
‘Crafting with Company’ sessions will encourage locals to come together, share their crafts, and enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.
Highlighting the community-focused ethos of their venture, Kelly remarks,
“Why craft alone at home when you can have company?”
The shop will also offer craft supplies and a range of printing services, from banners to custom clothing and signage.
Supporting the community
In addition to fostering creativity, Ztam and Co has also made a significant impact through charity efforts.
A recent raffle in aid of the Isle of Wight Spina Bifida raised £132, and a treadmill challenge by Peter May and Dave Darcy Leigh brought in £522.28.
These funds will support the Isle of Wight Spina Bifida society and provided Easter goodies for local children in need, with a portion also going to the Hollie Gazzard Trust.
Kelly extends her gratitude to the community for their overwhelming support,
“We would like to thank everyone who supported these two wonderful charities.”
A dream come true
As Ztam and Co embarks on this exciting journey, Kelly and Dee are a testament to the power of perseverance and community support. Their story is an inspiring reminder to always follow your dreams.
Eager to welcome new visitors and contributors to their dream project, Kelly, says,
“For updates on news from the shop and latest opening hours please follow our page.
“With heartfelt thanks to Helen and Charlie for the opportunity, and to all the sellers and supporters who have joined them in this venture, Ztam and Co is poised to become a staple in the Ryde community and a beacon for those chasing their dreams.”
