‘Not enough progress being made’ at Academy says Ofsted

The long-awaited Section 8 report for Sandown Bay Academy has just been published by Ofsted.

The report comes eight months after Sandown Bay Academy was placed by Ofsted into Special Measures (March 2013).

Not enough progress
The latest inspection found that although the Academy’s action plan is now ‘fit for purpose’, the inspector felt that the Academy is not making enough progress towards the removal of special measures.

The report states that the Academy has seen ‘significant staff turnover’ with new heads of English, mathematics, languages, religious education and classics have taken up post. A new special educational needs coordinator has recently taken over responsibility for this area and two members of the senior team left in the summer.

Concerns of Inspector
Some highlights of concerns include:

  • Although the proportion of students obtaining five or more good GCSEs including English and mathematics rose by 7%; the Academy’s targets were missed by an appreciable extent.
  • Too few students are making expected progress in Key Stage 3 in English due to previous staffing problems
  • The gap between performance of students eligible for the pupil premium and that of other students widened.
  • Despite some well-targeted intervention and support strategies, some groups of students are still underachieving significantly.
  • Some subjects still have very large gaps in achievement between boys and girls.
  • Overall progress of disabled students, and those with special educational needs, has not improved sufficiently
  • In contrast, those with autistic spectrum disorders, who are supported in The Cove unit, continue to make very good progress because of how well led this provision is, and the expertise of its staff.
  • The progress made by students in lessons is too variable.

Principal absent
As OnTheWight reported yesterday the Principal has been absent from the school for several weeks. AET told us yesterday that a statement regarding Shaheen Khan-Jones would be issued later today.

Why is it so many of our educational/vocational facilities on the Island are failing us? Whilst it’s undeniably true the lower echelons of the education system are underpaid by mainland standards it is my understanding that once the higher echelons are reached the financial package is as attractive as any offered elsewhere – Is this so?

I seem to recall being red voted for portraying the peripatetic Head’s original statement as “Spin, spin, spin…” I think schadenfreude is the word.

I thought payment was linked to performance in Academies or does that apply only to teachers and not to the Senior Leadership Team?
