Ventnor Film Society is pleased to announce a unique viewing experience and special pricing offer this November.
Sweden’s entry for this year’s Oscars has been causing quite a buzz in film circles.
Roy Andersson’s ‘A Pigeon Sat On A Tree Contemplating Existence’ is the final film in a trilogy that explores the tragi-comedy of the human condition and Ventnor Film Society has decided to show the ‘Living Trilogy’ in its entirety.
The trilogy was filmed over fifteen years; viewing it as a whole offers a unique insight into the director’s mind and explains the origins of some of the ideas in ‘Pigeon’.
Three for the price of one
We are happy to offer a special reduced entrance price for this programme. Viewers can see all three films for the price of one, as our usual price of £6 will cover one, two or all three films.
How to see the films
On Monday 9th Nov we will show Songs From the Second Floor at 8pm, in our usual venue, Ventnor Arts Club.
On Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th we will start early with You, The Living at 6pm, followed after a 25 minute interval by A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Contemplating Existence at 8pm.
A few interval snacks will be provided or there will be time to pop out for a bite.
Living trilogy
Each film comprises a series of scenes, mostly comic, sometimes bleak, that leave us asking what it is to be human.
Songs From The Second Floor: One evening, somewhere in our hemisphere, a strange series of illogical events take place: a clerk is made redundant in a degrading manner; a lost immigrant is violently attacked in a busy street; a magician makes an error in his act. In the midst of this mayhem, Karl comes to realizes just how difficult it is to be human.
You, The Living: In the Swedish city of Lethe, people from different walks of life take part in a series of short, deadpan vignettes that rush past. Some are just seconds long, none longer than a couple of minutes. The absurdist collection is accompanied by Dixieland jazz and similar music.
A Pigeon Sat On A Tree Contemplating Existence: We follow Sam and Jonathan, a pair of hopeless novelty joke salesmen, on a journey through the absurdity and tragicomedy of the human condition. We are not sure whether to laugh or cry as they travel through a drab and lonely world in search of a party that never materialises. Each interrelated scene creates its own place in a shocking world that moves from fantasy to nightmare.
