Police have cordoned an area of St James’ Street in Newport after a man was found injured just before 4am this morning, Sunday, February 14.
It appears that the man was assaulted. He is currently in a life threatening condition and being treated at Southampton General Hospital.
Please avoid the area today as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Road closures are in place on St James’ Street between McDonalds restaurant and the junction with Trafalgar Road. There are also closures at the junctions of St James’ Street with Chapel Street and Orchard Street.
Anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or has any information should contact police on 101 quoting incident #157.
Update 1:
A 20-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and remains in police custody.
The victim, a 49-year-old man from Newport, is in a life threatening condition at Southampton General Hospital.
Update 2:
A 21-year-old man and a 20-year-old man from Newport have also been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
