This year marks the 70th Anniversary of 622 Volunteer Gliding Squadron (622VGS), and to celebrate the end of this special year, they will be swapping the cockpit for the saddle.

On Sunday 28th December the squadron, made up of volunteers, will be riding seventy miles in full flight suits, on a fleet of four tandem bikes, donated by Sandy Balls holiday park.

The enterprising ride will begin at the 622VGS Airbase in Upavon, and continuing to Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury where it was based in the 1960s. The final stop will be in Christchurch, where the squadron was originally formed in 1944.

HIOWAA Chief Executive, Alex Lochrane, commented,

“We really appreciate the team donating half of the money they raise to help keep the Air Ambulance flying, and what a fantastic way to celebrate 70 years. The Air Ambulance relies solely on donations to continue providing this life saving service which is why every donation makes a difference.”

Donations can be or given to the team on the day and will be split between Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the RAF Benevolent fund.
