The Swim
Hello, he thought. She looks as if she’s in difficulties. The sea was calm; there must be a strong undercurrent.
From his viewpoint on the veranda he could see that she was level with the red navigation post where the cormorant sat. She was swimming on the spot. The comorant was unperturbed by her flailing body. Should he be? Should he raise the alarm.
It had been a tricky morning. He had irrtated her; she had needled him. Ah, she’s got herself out of trouble – she’s swimming to the shore.
He quietly tucked her life insurance policy back in the drawer.
