My sister hates our mother and dislikes her eldest daughter. This made Christmas rather tense. Our mother kept saying how nice the food was, but didn’t dare ask why my sister rarely phones. My niece chattered animately about her newly acquired Masters in Psychology, but actually wanted her father’s help with her rent. My brother in law washed up with increasing desperation. My nephew watched Friends on DVD. Eventually my sister took a carafe of red wine to bed. Later that week she resumed her voluntary work with the Samaritans. When Christmas was over, we left the house before nine am.
