Snow Wight: School, Service and Travel updates

Snow

There has been lots more snow overnight on the Wight. We’ll bring you the latest news as it happens.

Roads
Several roads have been declared closed already as follows;

Mersley Downs Road & Brading Downs Road
Blackgang to Niton
Betty Haunt Lane
Niton to Rookley – passable with care
St Lawrence Shute
Cowleaze Road, Shanklin, to Leeson Road, Ventnor
Newport Road, Ventnor – hand crews trying to clear but currently closed
Appleford Road opened instead of Emmett Hill. Work underway to clear Emmett Hill
Kingston to Shorwell – not currently passable

Traffic on the main Whitwell to Godshill Road is slow or stopping at times due to snow – ice – and some cars abandoned.

Low tree overhanging the carriageway – Warlands Lane – Shalfleet – only a small car would fit underneath.

Police say “If you live on the south side of the Isle of Wight – particularly around Niton – Whitwell – or Ventnor – only drive if necessary please.”

Emmett Hill nr Chale is impassable due to drifting snow. IWC planning to plough and salt Appleford Road to provide an alternative route.

Solent Travel
Strong winds causing problems berthing in West Cowes for Red Funnel, meaning they’ll only be running an hourly service until further notice. Hi-Speed will run at XX45 from Southampton and XX15 from West Cowes until further notice. Service suspended.
Vehicle ferry unaffected.

Hovertravel operating as normal.

Wightlink operating as normal (excluding pre-warned cancellations).

Southern Vectis
ROUTE 1: Operating normally
ROUTE 2: Doesn’t start service until 07:15 – may not serve Green Lane
ROUTE 3: Operating but not serving Wroxall and Ventnor at the present time
ROUTE 4: Should run normally
ROUTE 5: Operating normally
ROUTE 6: Doesn’t start till 07:51 – unlikely to serve Ventnor and maybe Niton – update late
ROUTE 7: We have a driver stuck in snowdrift enroute to depot – have sent vehicle out to check route
ROUTE 8: Operating but not serving parts of Seaview / Caws Avenue at present
ROUTE 9: Operating normally
ROUTE 12: Doesn’t start until 07:46 but we have a driver stuck in his car in a snowdrift in Shorwell.

Route 31: Suspended
Route 33 will not serve Bettesworth Road due to road conditions.

School buses
All school bus services to and from Wroxall & Ventnor areas are cancelled.

School buses not running today: 101A 105 329 404 320 330 318 328 312 405 316 311 317 310 315 316 319. Route 407 will not serve Green Lane due to road conditions. Route 331 will not serve Green Lane due to road conditions.

UPDATE 13.20
School Bus Services Cancelled – All services cancelled this morning as listed below will not operate this afternoon.

Medina College
315 – Whitwell to Medina College via Niton & Chale
316 – Niton to Medina College via Whitwell, Upper Ventnor, Winford & Arreton
318 – Ventnor (Central) to Medina College via Whitwell & Niton
319 – Wroxall to Medina College
320 – Luccombe to Medina College via Ventnor (Central) & Whitwell

Carisbrooke Secondary Schools:
328 – Brook to Carisbrooke College via Brighstone & Shorwell
329 – Niton to Carisbrooke College & Christ the King College via Chale, Chillerton & Gatcombe
330 – Whitwell to Carisbrooke College & Christ the King College via Ventnor, Upper Ventnor, Wroxall & Godshill
404 – Brook to Christ the King College via Brighstone & Shorwell
405 – St Lawrence to Christ the King College via Niton, Chale & Chillerton

Restricted services – These services will return to the usual routes.

Cowes Enterprise College:
304 – Serving Freshwater Bay via Porchfield, Yarmouth, Totland & Freshwater

Carisbrooke Schools:
331 – Carisbrooke College & Christ the King College, serving Lake via Shanklin & Godshill
407 to Christ the King College, serving Lake via Shanklin & Godshill

Additionally the following services will be reinstated this afternoon – Schools Advised:
301 – Ryde Academy to Bembridge via St Helens & Seaview
317 – Medina College to Upper Ventnor via Wroxall

Schools
The council say that it should be assumed all schools are open. Check the spreadsheet below for live updates throughout the day.

Graduate teacher programme training at Sandown Bay Academy cancelled today.

Services
Waste collections currently suspended due to the conditions. A review will be carried out later this morning to determine if they can resume.

However, the council say, “Please leave your waste out for collection unless advised otherwise.”

Update 8.30: Collections resuming as normal in Ryde, although some small roads may not be accessible. Collections remain suspended in other areas due for collection today.

Update 13.40:
RYDE: Collections have taken place as normal.

RURAL ROUND: Today’s collection has been cancelled. If you were due to have your waste collected today, it will now be collected on Saturday morning. Please take your waste in today and put it out for collection by Saturday morning.

FRESHWATER (through Calbourne to Chillerton): Collections have taken place as normal

BRIGHSTONE & SHORWELL: Today’s collection has been cancelled due to poor road conditions – will now take place on Saturday (details as above)

NITON, CHALE & St LAWRENCE: Today’s collection has been cancelled due to poor road conditions – will now take place on Saturday (as above)
Ventnor Library closed today due to staff shortages.
