Spectacular GCSE improvement at Carisbrooke College

A week after other schools shared details of GCSE results, Island Innovation Trust release details of GCSE results from Carisbrooke College. In their own words. Ed

The spectacular improvement at Carisbrooke College this academic year will compare favourably with improvement figures at any other school nationally, according to Headteacher, Peter Shaw.

He said

“A lot of people in a lot of places will be sitting up and taking notice of this major step forward for our school. One of our headline figures, the number of students obtaining five GCSEs at A*-C including English and Maths, has surged from below 30% to 54%.

“It really is a remarkable achievement by our fabulous students, a few of whom are Danish Hameed who achieved 5A*s and 5As, Lucy Dayman 5A*s, 3As, 1B and 1C, Felix El Alami 4A*s, 5As and 1B and Shae Brett who got 5A* 4A 1B and of course our wonderful staff.

“School improvement takes time and we have been putting in place a number of developments for a while now to make this happen. I am very, very proud of our hardworking learning community but this must not be a flash in the pan. We need to do this year after year.”

The number of students making better than expected progress in English and Maths this academic year, measured by achievement between Key Stage 2 SATS and Year 11 examinations, has also improved significantly.

“What a year!”
Chair of Governors, Joe Finch, said,

“This is further excellent news. I am really pleased for Pete and his team who quickly put last summer`s performance behind them and worked incredibly hard this year so that student levels of progress in English and Maths, one of the key Ofsted judgements on any school, now approach or exceed National averages.

“Coming out of Special Measures, fighting off closure, now this stunning improvement-what a year!”

Many congratulations to Carisbrooke. 54% in that criteria is very close to the projected national average. Clearly not all schools have done this well or we would have heard something from them by now.

Not that that should take anything away from a dramatic improvement against all the odds. Huge congratulations to staff, governors and pupils.

Congratulations to the students and staff at Carisbrooke who have achieved such an improvement in what has been, by any standards, a difficult year. I trust these wonderful results will be trumpeted loudly by the ward councillor…#firsttimeforeverything.

Great results from a school facing closure up until the 8th July!
Well done to all pupils, teachers + staff for your commitment + high achievement.
Well done also to our Independent Council who went against Hampshire Officers recommendation to close this school.
You made the correct choice.

Outstanding, Pete Shaw does what it says on the tin. A pity Medina can’t be as open with their results…

Well done to the marvelous work of all at Carisbrooke for pulling the proverbial rabbit out of the hat and shoving it in CW’s face.

If they can achieve a 30% improvement surrounded by such uncertainty and disruption, they’re well on the way to being one of the best facilities on the Island. Well done to this school community. I look forward to watching its progress. Great to have some good news for a change about Island education.
