Thanks to Bryn for this reminder about tonight’s race. In his own words, Ed
The Wightlink Islanders are aiming to get their quest to win the 2012 National Trophy off to a winning start at Smallbrook Stadium, Ryde tonight when they take on the Buxton Hitmen in a match that gets underway at 7.30pm.
The National Trophy involves these two sides together with Mildenhall and Stoke with each meeting the other teams both at home and away.
Close call during last race
Victory tonight is what co-promoter Chris Hunt both wants and expects although he’s mindful of the fact that that Buxton proved tough opponents when the two sides met in the league match at Smallbrook at the end of July, a match that saw the Islanders win 49-44.
“We suffered more than our fair share of bike problems that night,” he said, “and providing we don’t suffer a repeat of those, I expect us to win comfortably.”
Keeping it in the family
Main riders to look out for in Buxton’s side are Charles Wright who top scored for them in the league match with 15 points and is riding for Glasgow in the Premier League, and Adam McKinna who, as a speedway rider, is following in the footsteps (or should that be tyretracks?) of Dad Kenny and Uncles Charlie and Martin!
Opening early
The turnstiles will be open early giving those attending chance to see the pre-match bike preparations going on in the pit area, at 7.20pm it’s the introduction of riders to the public with the first race scheduled to get underway ten minutes later.
Two seven man sides, two riders from each going head-to-head into full-throttle battle in each of the 15 races astride their 500cc highly-tuned motorbikes with NO brakes around four laps of the 385 metre loose shale Smallbrook circuit.
It’s action all the way and a fun night out too so DON’T miss it!
