Thanks to Bryn for this latest news from Island Speedway. Ed
More commercial backing this week for the return of the sport of speedway to the Isle of Wight next year with the news that RMR Products, owned by former rider Roy Miller, are to supply Island Speedway’s 2016 team race jackets.
Roy, who first saw speedway in 1981 at Exeter before moving to Adelaide in Australia and is the MD at RMR Products, has via his company become the latest sponsors of the Islanders as we build up to 2016. Roy who specialises in race jackets and Retro products set the business up in Adelaide some time ago before returning, to Exeter has seen the business really take off.
Talking about his decision to get involved with the return of the sport of speedway to the Isle of Wight next year he said
“The reason I want to sponsor and be involved with Island Speedway is that I think it’s fantastic that the club is making a comeback and I would like to do my bit by sponsoring them by supplying the race jackets for the 2016 season as I will do with Plymouth and the Exeter Falcons. If this little bit we are doing helps the Island club then it’s worthwhile and also a pleasure to help out and save the club some money.”
Commercial Director of Island Speedway Barry Bishop said,
“To be called out of the blue from Roy with this offer of support is tremendous. Martin Widman and I work really hard to ensure our product and brand is right and Roy’s offer proves we are getting the right message out there. We already have great community relations with Exeter and the commercial team at Somerset via our team sponsor SBS Epos and this link up with Exeter’s jacket maker is fabulous.
“With the build up to our website launch and new branding for Island Speedway this deal could not have come at a better time for the club and our plan is to allow fans to sponsor race jackets for the season and they will have the opportunity to keep this unique piece of island memorabilia for the future.
“Our thanks go to Roy as we welcome him and RMR Products to the team.”
All heats now sponsored for 2016 season
Paul Hubbard has taken the opportunity to pay tribute to his well known and popular sister, Sharon, by sponsoring a heat with Island Speedway for the 2016 season.
Paul said,
“I’ve decided to sponsor a heat in memory of my late sister Sharon (Shazzybird) Hubbard, who sadly passed away from cancer at the tender age of 47 on the 28/6/2015. She was an avid Speedway fan from a very young age and very much looked up to her uncle Ted who rode in the 70s and 80s.
“She was very well known and liked throughout the whole of the speedway community, often seen attending the WRSA do’s and also never missed a GP at Cardiff. She was a massive Poole pirates fan in later years but Speedway started for the whole family at Kingsmead stadium, the home of the Canterbury Crusaders.”
A delighted Barry Bishop said,
“Sharon’s passing saddened the whole speedway community and was recognised by the sports media and GP riders. The fact that Paul has chosen to support Island Speedway in memory of someone so well known and loved by people in and away from the sport further emphasises that people across the UK are really getting behind the club and its ambitions.”
“Sharon’s race sponsorship means that all the heats for 2016 are now sponsored – it’s an incredible achievement and Martin Widman and I cannot thank those who have come forward to sponsor each race enough. We simply cannot wait to get bikes on the track now. Our track team are doing a super job to ensure we have a first class racing facility for years to come.”
