Stop The Cuts: 1,000+ March In Protest At Budget Cuts

Saturday lunchtime saw hundreds of people congregate in Newport and march in solidarity against the massive public service cuts being proposed by the Isle of Wight council.

Banners from the marchCouncil workers, residents young and old, Labour, Lib Dem, Independent and even Tories marched to send a message to the councillors who will be voting this coming Wednesday (23rd) on the proposals to make nearly £18m of savings, £9m of which relate to a loss of grants from the Government.

Newport shoppers joined
The huge snake of people grew in size, picking up shoppers, as it weaved its way through the streets of Newport, bringing traffic to a standstill. By the time the march reached St Thomas’ Square, estimates were that in excess of 1,000 concerned Islanders had taken part.

As protesters gathered in the square, speeches were made by various interested parties. Mark Chiverton, Unison branch rep for the IW, got the ball rolling, followed by Labour county councillor, Geoff Lumley, Bob Burton (Trades Union), the Unison rep for the South, as well as Tanja Rebel and Geoff Mason from the Stop The Cuts Alliance.

Speeches given
Rob Wilson (the Butterfly Man) read out a particularly poignant poem and an ex-Tory cabinet member gave a spontaneous and heartfelt speech telling the protesters how he was incandescent with rage at the cuts being made at County Hall.

VB filmed the entire march and speeches and have video footage and podcasts to follow on VentnorBlog in the lead up to the next demo which takes place on Wednesday (23rd) at 5pm outside County Hall.

I was proud to be part of the March on Saturday with my sons , we are all affected by what is happening. I was made redundant because of the SP cuts last year.I just hope that the Council listen to what we are saying , but to be honest that is unlikely with Pugh already stating that nothing will change even with the march.

David Pugh didn’t attend the rally, he seems to lack the courage to engage with people, or perhaps it’s just insecurity?

Of course it could also be that he was far too busy getting ready for the posh dinner dance in Shanklin last night?

They didn’t stay long though. They appeared at the Quay as we were all gathering, but they soon disappeared

That only half off the Islands £18m cuts are due to the Coalition butchering public services clearly demonstrates that the Council have well and truly Burbaged the Island and its tax payers. They are responsible for squandering our money due to their incompetence and wastefulness and now the they intend to just ignore our protests. They dug the hole we are in and we are supposed to… Read more »

I give up. No one appears to want to stand up to this Council. If you think one organised march on a Saturday is going to change anything you are mistaken. Only taking a risk and surprising them in large numbers will change things. If you sit at home and do nothing in the face of Pugh and his lot you will have brought the cuts on… Read more »

No change without pain.
Wearing shoe leather never achieved anything;
except for blistering the feet.

Block the their car parks once a week. Now that would wake them up in the Ivory Tower.

I am in my 72nd year and have spent 63 of those on this wonderful island.Only during the present administration’s rule have I been incensed enough to join a protest march.I agree with so many other islanders that this tory-led council has wasted our money in an unprecedented way and plunged us near to total disaster. They are arrogant enough to think they can brush aside the comments… Read more »

Of course Pugh didn’t put in an appearance. Clearly the man has neither imagination nor courage, or he would have seen how answering his critics in public might have spiked their guns. On the other hand, he would have put himself in the impossible position of having to defend the indefensible. As it is, and others here have suggested, he can simply ignore the protests, unless he… Read more »

There are lots of things we can do, as Geoff Lumley said ‘phone & write to the Councillors and give them stick over the cuts. Hand wringing ain’t going to do it.Don Smith had a good suggestion ‘blocking the car park once a week’. How about spend a penny and send it along in a jar to the Council meeting, to show them how peed off we’ll… Read more »

“Phone & write to the Councilors”
I would but the councilor for Carisbrooke has been convicted of a sex act in a public toilet, who wants to contact him?

Can someone get up a petition calling for Councillors to give up their allowances for at least two years or as long as it takes to get the Island’s finances out? (I’m too old and lacking in energy to take the task on myself.) This should hit Councillors where it hurts, and save nearly £500,000 each year which could be spent on saving Council staff jobs and… Read more »

Why not forget the Library Rally at 4pm on Wednesday, lets get as many “visitors” inside County Hall as possible and have a full scale sit in, I’m sure the staff would like to see more active support for their jobs and our services. Come on Caulkheads, rise up! Make your presence felt and jolt these tory wastrels into the 21st century and meke them see that… Read more »

LOL at Baz’s comment!! This Tory Councillor must surely be protesting about Public toilet closures. The Car park blocking sounds like a good plan. I will be at Newport Council offices this Wednesday, I hope as many people as possible come along. Its time to stand up and be counted. The honest, hard working people of Britain are putting up with sooo much rubbish from our ruling/upper… Read more »

Keep the ideas coming, all of these will be talked through at the next Alliance meeting. But the message is most definitely…it’s not over yet and we will continue to fight after the 23rd. So if the tories think….in the words of Gary Taylor…’we will put away our megaphones’…then they have another think coming…..

I think the urine idea is a great one. Slightly disgusting of course, but then so is closing most island loos. If people turn up with it on Wednesday, let’s hope none gets spilt.

Instead of real urine…how about yellow coloured water?

The Tories have certainly been taking the proverbial ‘urine’ out of the public so they certainly more than deserve to be inconvienenced as tory councillors!
Denial of services they themselves use could be made to cut both ways in a pertinanly personal token manner that manages to just remain legal in circumspection?

My first point is that it was great to see such a representative cross section of Island society marching on Saturday. Folks from all walks of life, united in the belief that the Council in their proposals have got it wrong. Hats off to those who organized the rally. My Second point is that the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), the ‘independent’ think tank, whose research is… Read more »
