Storm damage leads to large void in sea wall and part closure of esplanade

A section of the eastern esplanade at Ventnor is to be closed today (Thursday) following storm damage to the sea wall.

The Isle of Wight council said the decision was a precautionary measure and followed a site inspection just beyond Ventnor Skatepark where a large void and cracking had appeared in the concrete defences.

Natasha Dix, the council’s strategic manager for environment, said,

“Following our inspection this morning, we believe it is not safe for people to be walking on this section of the wall until we have a clear idea of the extent of the damage.

“The area will be monitored daily, and a full engineering inspection will take place when it is safe to do so.”
