Next week the cabinet of the Isle of Wight council is meeting to discuss further spending cuts.
Tucked away in the background paperwork for the meeting is a line that says “Cessation of Student rider scheme from 1st September 2010.”
That’s potentially halting the Student Rider scheme that enables many children (5 and 19 in full-time education) over the Island to get to school and around the Island after school hours and at weekends.
VentnorBlog will be providing live coverage of the cabinet meeting where this is being discussed – Tuesday 13th July 2010 from 6pm.
Background: 50p > £1 > £1.20 > cancelled?
You’ll remember that back in February this year, the council put the price of the Student Rider up from £1 to £1.20 – this was after they doubled its price from 50p to £1 in March 2008.
The most recent 20% rise lead to Maria leaving the following comment
That means it will cost me £4.80 per day just to get my 2 kids to school 2.8 miles away. £960 per year. This is outrageous. The kids ought to get free transport to school. So what happens when people can’t afford to send their kids to school on the bus?
