Cowes Harbour Commission has been granted full planning consent to progress development of the ‘Sugar Store’ warehouse at its Shephards Wharf site.
As well as improving facilities for yachtsmen visiting Cowes harbour, the new building will create business opportunities in the marine sector.
Expressions of interest are now being encouraged from prospective commercial operators.
Friendly and customer-focused marina
Redevelopment of the store was approved by Cowes Harbour Commission as part of its ongoing investment programme in Cowes. Under its management, Shephards Wharf has been established as a popular place to berth and has a growing reputation as a friendly and customer focused marina.
The new building will combine existing marina facilities with self-contained offices, a bar and restaurant facility, workshops and retail spaces. Harbour Master and Chief Executive Stuart McIntosh commented, “We are committed to investing in Cowes. Developing the Sugar Store will improve facilities at Shepards Wharf Marina, whilst creating new business opportunities. This should benefit both the marina users and the local economy.”
He continued, “The Sugar Store building will be the latest development in the Medina Road area of Cowes which has undergone a resurgence in recent years. It is fast becoming an important commercial hub in this part of Cowes and the Solent region.”
Multi-use expectation for new building
Whilst preference may be given to maritime-related businesses, the new building is expected to be multi-use. It could provide the perfect relocation opportunity for commercial operators on the Isle of Wight or for those currently located elsewhere.
The build is adjacent to a conservation area, so has been carefully drafted to assimilate the surrounding features. The new design, by local Island architects, combines nautical themes and utility, to offer a fresh and innovative style.
A commercial prospectus is now available by contacting the Harbour Office in Cowes.
