Thanks to Krissy from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation for this very useful information for our older and more vulnerable readers. Ed
A new scheme to help vulnerable and older people affected by fuel poverty has been launched locally by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF).
It is part of the “Surviving Winter” appeal, a UK-wide co-ordinated campaign to encourage people to make donations to help those in financial need this winter. Money raised by HIWCF will directly benefit those people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight living in fuel poverty.
Donations of Winter Fuel Payment
The campaign was originally inspired by individuals who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment from the government to support older and vulnerable people who are less fortunate than themselves. Now both individuals and businesses across the county are being encouraged to donate.
It is being supported by former TV presenter Dickie Davies “This is a marvellous initiative and it gives everyone, including those who receive the winter fuel payment, the opportunity to help older people in our local community who struggle with their winter heating bills. I will certainly be donating my winter fuel allowance when it comes through this winter.” He added “this campaign is targeting only those who can really afford it.”
Target of £100,000
HIWCF hopes to raise £100,000 for older people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. What they collect will be targeted directly to help those older people locally who struggle to stay warm through the winter.
Toni Shaw, Chief Executive of HIWCF commented “Everyone who helps by making a donation will be making a real difference to those who are struggling to make ends meet during the winter months”.
Toni added “It is not just about keeping warm, lots of older people become more isolated in their homes when the cold winter sets in, so by working alongside our partner organisations, we are well placed to identify those in need of extra financial support and target the money raised with speed and efficiency.”
